NORTH AMERICAN LIAISON OFFICE (IFAD/NALO)

INTERNSHIPS

IFAD/NALO offers internships in Washington, DC to individuals pursuing a course of

studies or practical experience in policy advocacy or communications in the field of

international development. Our internships expose students to a wide range of

development issues, such as small-scale agriculture and rural development, sustainability,

gender issues, and development finance.

Qualifications

Applicants should be able to work at least part-time (25 hours or more) during the fall

semester. All applicants must be current university students and must receive academic

credit from their university for the internship. Interns must have excellent analytical and

writing abilities, good interpersonal and communications skills, and a strong interest in

international development, particularly rural development. Knowledge of Microsoft

Office is required. Previous work experience in a congressional office is desirable. We

accept applications from both graduate and undergraduate students. This is an unpaid

internship. Letters of reference are provided for those who successfully complete the

internship.

Outcomes for the Intern

The IFAD/NALO internship will afford students and young professionals the opportunity

to gain knowledge of policymaking processes and deepen their understanding of policy

issues related to rural development and international development finance. Interns will

gain familiarity with the workings of a United Nations organization and acquire an

understanding of the purpose and functioning of a liaison office. In addition, interns will

learn about career possibilities in the field of international development policy and

develop their skills and abilities in a highly specialized policy environment.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit a completed Personal History Form with three references, a brief

writing sample (3-5 pages) on a related topic, as well as a cover letter explaining their

interest in the internship. All applicants must be currently enrolled in undergraduate or

internship will start during the first week of September and conclude at the end of December

2011.
