Position: Performance Department/World Show Internship

Available: September – December 2011

Immediate Supervisor: Holly Nelson, Senior Director of Show and Contest

Introduction: The American Paint Horse Association is a breed registry located in Fort Worth,

Texas. The Association performs the function of registration, record keeping, show management,

field services, racing coordination, publishing, public relations, information dissemination and

administration. In addition, the Association fulfills its purpose of promoting the American Paint

Horse through efficient service to members, directors and the general public.

The Performance Department was created to organize and develop different programs for the

association to meet the needs of its members’ wide array of interests and ages. The Performance

Department includes a staff of approximately fourteen that handle the following programs: Youth,

Amateur, showing and judging. The Performance Department oversees the management of the

APHA-sponsored Open/Amateur World Championship Show, which will be held November 2-12,

2011 at Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, TX.

Responsibilities: The Intern will work primarily in the Performance Department and will also

have the opportunity to work with individuals in marketing, media and Paint Horse Journal. The

intern will assist staff and show management with various duties related to the Performance

Department and the World Show including, but not limited to:

􀁸 Scheduling

􀁸 Award preparation and distribution

􀁸 Facility arrangements

􀁸 Show preparation

􀁸 Coordination of events during the show

􀁸 Post show reporting of statistics and results

􀁸 Projects related to the Youth Program

Basic Requirements: Seeking individual majoring in Animal Science, Equine Science,

Agribusiness or related field who desires to learn more about breed associations and develop

skills to work within the horse industry.

Recommended Fields of Study: Animal or Equine Science preferred or any related major.

Duration of Internship: This internship will be from September to December. However, these

dates may be modified to fit the intern’s schedule.

Salary: $1,200 per month

Internship Announcement

Position: Paint Horse Journal Internship

Available: Negotiable--September 1 through December 1, 2011

Immediate Supervisor: Tonya Ratliff-Garrison, Editor

Introduction: The American Paint Horse Association, a breed registry located in

Fort Worth, Texas, offers a summer publications/editorial internship each year for

a college junior or senior or recent graduate to experience being an employee at

an equestrian magazine.

The person who comes on board will assist with all aspects of the business from

writing, photography, website coverage, social media and copy editing.

Responsibilities: The Intern will work in the Editorial Department and will also

have the opportunity to work with individuals in marketing, media and other

departments. The intern will be responsible for assisting staff, writing stories and

doing photography (camera equipment is provided) for the Paint Horse Journal

and APHA’s quarterly member magazine Paint Horse Connection as well as

assisting staff and writing stories for the Internet at the World Show.

Basic Requirements: A junior or senior (recent graduate considered) majoring

in Journalism, Agricultural Journalism or similar field who has a love for the Paint

Horse and desires to learn more about breed associations and develop skills to

work within the equine industry. Candidate should have a strong understanding

of and background in not only horses but also writing and at least a basic

understanding of and interest in photography. The candidate should be Internet

savvy and understand the concept of social media.

Duration of Internship: This internship is for the fall quarter/semester including

participation in the World Show November 2-12; however, these dates might be

modified to fit the intern’s needs.

Housing and Transportation: The intern is responsible for transportation, room

and board. The APHA office is located in Northeast Fort Worth and the 2011

APHA World Championship Show will be near downtown Fort Worth, about 10

miles from the APHA headquarters. There is no public transportation available.

Salary: $1,200 per month

three writing samples and a personal essay. Also include at least three

responsible for covering activities and events at the APHA World Championship

Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

American Paint Horse Association Internship Announcement

Position: Marketing/Public Relations Internship

Immediate Supervisor: Director of Marketing

Available: September to December 2011

Introduction: The American Paint Horse Association is a breed registry located in Fort Worth, Texas.

The association performs the function of registration, record keeping, show management, sale scheduling,

field services, racing coordination, publishing, public relations, information dissemination and

administration. In addition, the association fulfills its purpose of promoting the American Paint Horse

through efficient service to members, directors and the general public.

Summary: The intern will work in the Marketing/Public Relations department, as well as have the

opportunity to work closely with individuals in editorial, graphics and other departments.

Responsibilities:

􀁸 Write and disseminate daily press releases.

􀁸 Assist in developing a media marketing plan for the World Championship Paint Horse Show.

􀁸 Promote the World Show before and during the event by working with individuals in the equine

industry and from the media.

􀁸 Write hometown world champion press releases at the conclusion of World Show and

disseminate to editors of hometown newspapers.

􀁸 Develop and maintain a list of media contacts.

􀁸 Assist in updating marketing materials for the association.

􀁸 Work closely with all employees in the Marketing department to complete various tasks as

assigned.

Duration of Internship: This internship will be from September to December 2011, however, these

dates may be modified to fit the intern’s needs.

Goals: The APHA Marketing Intern will have the opportunity to develop a portfolio of news clips

resulting from various press releases. At the duration of the internship, the intern will have developed a

list of contacts in the equine industry, as well as with local media.

Basic Requirements: Seeking an individual majoring in Journalism, Agricultural Communication/

Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or related field, who desires to learn more about breed

associations and develop skills to work within the horse industry.

Other Requirements:

􀁸 Strong writing and organizational skills

􀁸 Self-starter with the ability to follow-through with a project

􀁸 Must be detail-oriented, flexible and able to multi-task

􀁸 Horse experience a plus

􀁸 Knowledge of AP Stylebook

Salary: $7.50 per hour
