What to Expect
Each summer, Farm Credit Services of Mid-America provides a unique internship opportunity for college sophomores and juniors above and beyond a summer job. Farm Credit encourages interns to evaluate our company as a potential employer and we in turn view this as a 10-week job interview, as many interns return as full-time employees.
Summer interns are placed in a field office close to their college residence or hometown, and paired with a Financial Services Officer who will serve as a mentor. The Financial Services Officer role is a competitive, goal-oriented sales and marketing position. A Financial Services Officer’s responsibilities are not only to sell and market financial products to potential and existing customers, but to build relationships with these clients and meet their financial needs. Also, a successful FSO maintains a positive presence in the rural areas he or she serves by becoming involved in community organizations and events.
An intern has the opportunity to observe this role first hand through numerous job shadowing opportunities such as sales calls, loan closings in and out of the office, customer appreciation events, and other networking events. Interns are also encouraged to job-shadow other departments in our organization such as marketing, credit, and appraisal.
In the spotlight
A marketing project is also assigned which will be presented to area leaders and our CEO nearing the end of the internship. Projects in the past have included: competitive analysis of local banks, evaluation of market penetration, research on crop insurance providers, and marketing plans for specific products or programs. A detailed development guide is provided which outlines the assigned project and available resources.
The internship program is kicked-off every year with a group dinner and orientation at our central office in Louisville, Kentucky so interns can get to know their teammates and have an introduction to Farm Credit Services of Mid America.
Furthermore, interns are taken on a two-day team building outing in July where they experience unique agribusinesses and operations in our four-state region. FCS interns have toured Beck’s Hybrids in Anderson, Indiana, the Kentucky bluegrass region, and Mayfield Dairy in southeast Tennessee followed by white water rafting!
