Job Description
Agronomy Lead
Status:  FT
Reports To:  Aaron Howell
Salary:  Dependent on experience
Howell Farms is a diversified, second-generation family farming operation headquartered in central Indiana growing top quality tomatoes, pumpkins, corn and soybeans. Our team is innovative and our company is structured and positioned for successful growth today and in the future.  Our entire team is driven to continually increase production while preserving our most valued resource - our land.
We have an excellent team in place and we are looking to add another key person at our Middletown, IN location as an Agronomy Lead. This role combines agronomy, data management and field operations management. This position is extremely hands on as a large portion of the responsibility will relate to processing tomato planting and harvest operations.  We are looking for a detail oriented and driven person with an understanding of the importance of managing crop issues with a sense of urgency.  There will be a combination of 75% in-field work and 25% in-office data management, research and reporting.
î  Collaborate with outside consultant and operations manager to plan and execute fertilizer and chemical applications.
î  Soil and tissue sample collection - work closely with an outside agronomic consultant to analyze and develop action plan based on results.
î  Crop scouting for weed, insect and disease pressure – work closely with an outside agronomic consultant and owners to develop action plan based on findings.
î  Management of irrigation. Mostly drip irrigation and some center pivot irrigation.
î  Responsible for providing up-to-date reports on agronomic conditions and crop progress to management throughout the season.
î  Work closely with Operations Manager to develop work order for spray schedule and coordinate application.
î  Maintain and ensure accuracy of all crop input application records and report to accounting personnel in a timely fashion.
î  Supervise chemical and fertilizer application procedures.
î  Work in conjunction with outside agronomic consultant to manage production data and evaluate production practices.
î  Assist management and outside consultant in development of crop production budgets.
Processing Tomato Operations
î   Collaborate with operations manager to plan, manage and coordinate tomato planting, fertilizing, spraying, harvesting and shipping to ensure that we are consistently and reliably delivering a quality product to our buyer (Red Gold Inc.).
î  Manage field crew, equipment, and trucking to ensure efficient use of labor and equipment and delivery of quality product.
î  Work closely with Mechanic Lead on maintenance and major repairs.
Precision Ag Technology
î  Install, connect, move and update all precision ag equipment. Work with vendor and service provider to resolve any issues that occur.
î  Work with consultant to collect and process all in-field data, to measure performance, and provide reports to the management team.
î  Utilize field mapping technology.
Other Activities
î  Assist with in field projects such as drainage tile and waterway installation and maintenance
î  Other tasks as assigned
î  2 or 4 year college degree in Ag Technology, Crop and Soil Sciences, Agriculture or related fields preferred, not required.
î  Minimum 1-2 years of experience in working with precision ag technology
î  3-5 years farming, agricultural services or related experience
î  Ability to lead a team.
î  Ability to research, analyze and present data to management in a clear, organized manner.
