Purpose of Position/ Summary
This position serves as the primary support to the Director of Communications, helping to assist with all ISDA outreach events, messaging efforts, advocacy programming, crisis response and media correspondence. In the Director's absence, this individual may serve as liaison to the Lt. Governor's Press Secretary and Communications Staff.
Essential Duties/ Responsibilities
Develops and manages daily media operations, including helping to research and answer reporter inquiries, accommodate ISDA interviews/data requests, coordinate press events and shape talking points. This individual has a critical role in fostering new and cultivating existing relationships with a number of media outlets.
Plays a pivotal part in executing both external and internal communications for ISDA, its activities, awareness efforts and even image, by formulating ideas for, drafting and distributing news releases, media advisories, brochures and marketing materials.
Helps in developing, coordinating, crafting and editing content to be used on multiple media platforms, including TV, radio, print publications, e-blasts, the ISDA website and social media sites.
Works closely with the Director of Communications in disseminating information to and helping to coordinate cohesive messaging for ISDA's individual departments, as well as the Governor and Lt. Governor's Office and ISDA's many partners.
Helps to coordinate communication, marketing and promotion efforts for the department at various trade shows and conventions, Ag Day/appreciation events and the Indiana State Fair, all in an effort to expand ISDA's presence at venues across and even beyond our state.
Must be able to work under deadlines in a dynamic, changing environment. Must be able to juggle multiple projects and carry out tasks with a team approach and willingness to work with a wide variety of personalities. Must have strong research, written and verbal communication skills and a creative edge. May be expected to speak/give presentations on behalf of the department. Graphic design experience is a major plus.
Supervisory Responsibilities/ Direct Reports:
Reports directly to the ISDA Director of Communications and Outreach.
Difficulty of Work
The work is broad in scope involving many complex program elements which require critical and administrative analytical abilities. Work assignments involve the development of new programs and procedures and an assessment and recommendation on whether to implement those already established. Guidelines are established, but require broad interpretation and judgment in application and implementation. This position requires high level project management and strategic planning capabilities.
Incumbent will be required to make subjective decisions when planning media/marketing events and while representing the Director in their absence.
Personal Work Relationships
Incumbent will frequently interact with ISDA employees and media contacts. Incumbent will often be the contact point for media inquiries and will work with Director of Communications to properly respond. This position will also interact with the general public and industry partners during media and marketing campaigns
Minimal, although, the ability to assist media is necessary.
A majority of work is office work in Marion County. Some travel will be required and some overnight stays will be likely.
