Position: Senior Agricultural Economist
General Accountability:
The Senior Agricultural Economist will be an integral part of a team of investment professionals managing $1.5
billion in private equity investments in agricultural real estate for the Hancock Agricultural Investment Group
(HAIG). HAIG is an operating division of the Hancock Natural Resource Group, Inc., an independent and
wholly owned subsidiary of Manulife Financial Corporation. This position reports directly to the President of
The Senior Agricultural Economist position is accountable for the economic research functions of HAIG,
including four main areas.
Timely development and publishing of core commodity research reports
Standardization and branding of research process and publications in order to further develop HAIG’s
position as a leading expert in farmland investing
Timely development and review of HAIG’s country specific investment strategies
Support of the other HAIG business functions with research information
Develop, maintain and communicate proprietary commodity and economic investment research for
Attend industry conferences and other relevant meetings
Conduct in-depth research pertaining to new commodities, investment strategies, and regions including
but not limited to those within the United States, Canada, and Australia
Create presentations for senior management to communicate findings and recommendations
Communicate HAIG’s investment strategy to clients in the US, Australia and Canadian farmland
Assist in the generation of new investment ideas and concepts for existing and prospective clients
Conduct research of economic and investment market trends to shape the creation of new ideas and
educational white papers to be used to develop client presentation materials
Develop materials to support the Business Development Group, the Portfolio Management Group and
the Asset Management Group
Lead efforts on special projects that may include, but are not limited to, property inspections, client
requests and interaction, and analyses and research projects on an ad hoc basis.
May also be required to prepare presentations, financial analyses, management memorandums, and other
documents for the Director of Asset Management, Director of Acquisitions, or the Business
Development and Portfolio Management groups on an as needed, project basis.
A solid understanding of and genuine interest in agriculture; a firm grasp of investment strategy and
financial analysis
Master’s Degree with a major in business, finance, economics or agricultural economics is required,
PhD degree strongly preferred
8 – 10 years relevant experience in economic research or a directly related environment
Excellent working knowledge and practical application of financial principles, policies, and procedures
Professional experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
Excellent approach to problem solving from high level to operational details
High degree of self-motivation; comfort with ambiguity in problem-solving
Excellent internet research skills and ability to present analyses in a clear and concise manner (verbal
and written) are essential functions for this position
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to interact and build relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization and with
external parties
Strong organizational and project management skills commensurate with prioritizing, managing and
completing multiple projects concurrently
Ability to think independently and develop new ideas from fruition to implementation
Airline travel is an essential function of this position with travel expected to be 10-20%
Must have strong professional and presentation skills to represent HAIG to clients and others in the
external community
General knowledge of alternative asset classes and the investment management industry would be a plus
Professional designation such as CFA or CAIA would be an asset
