AgEcon Student Pursues Passion through Livestock Judging Team

Written by: Jo Thomas, Academic Advisor

Jacob Studer (Agrimarketing; Smithville, OH) has been raising and showing beef cattle for most of his life. He enjoys all sides of livestock production but finds his biggest passion lay in the evaluation and judging of animals. Jacob began his college career at Blinn College, a junior college located in Brenham, Texas. There he studied agriculture sciences and was a member of their livestock judging team.

As Jacob’s time as a Brenham student ended, he looked to other universities that would allow him to continue his studies in agriculture and livestock judging. “Purdue seemed to be a good fit for me as I knew a handful of people that had been through the program and all had good experiences judging at Purdue.”

Jacob began his junior year in the AgEcon department in the Fall of 2019 and joined Purdue’s Livestock Judging Team. Being a member of the judging team has presented once in a lifetime opportunities while also allowing him to gain professional skills like critical thinking, public speaking and networking.
“My favorite part about being on the livestock judging team is having an opportunity to travel across the country doing something that I absolutely love. The places/people I have met through this experience are one in a million and I have had the opportunity to see so many top-notch livestock operations along the way. I have also had a chance to attend and compete at stock shows across the country which has been an awesome experience.”

While Jacob has grown so much as an individual, he has also built lifelong friendships, something he says surprised him. “To me the one thing that surprised me the most through being a team member is how close my relationship is with my teammates. Over the past three years judging has allowed me to meet so many great people that have become some of my best friends. Without becoming a part of the team, I wouldn’t have these great people in my life.”
