Message From The Dean

Purdue Agriculture is the source of career-ready graduates for a growing job sector, research that solves Indiana problems and Extension programs that improve lives and livelihoods for Indiana’s farmers and food and life sciences agribusiness professionals.

This issue of Agricultures showcases learning, discovery and engagement programs that serve Indiana.

•  An expanding agriculture —with health innovations, specialty foods, biofuels and environmental technologies—means new jobs to be filled. College of Agriculture graduates provide a highly educated workforce that enhances the state’s economic growth.

•   Purdue plant scientists are researching new geneticvarieties to enhance crops and meet increasing food and energy needs, and Purdue researchers are finding ways to help livestock producers enhance animal well-being and improve animal physical condition and nutrition.

•   Purdue Extension’s expertise in product development, business planning, technical assistance, and marketing and distribution helps rural entrepreneurs and food producers grow theirbusinesses. A proposed Central Indiana Food Hub could provide small farmers and rural entrepreneurs with access to specialty crop markets and new opportunities.

The economic vitality of Indiana depends on the continued strength and advancement of the agriculture, food and life sciences industries. Purdue Agriculture is uniquely positioned to support their future growth and expansion.
