Inflorescence Project

The maize inflorescence architecture project aims to understand the genetic interactions and QTL regions affecting the development of the tassels and the ears.

For the efficient and economical F1 hybrid seed production, it is required that the tassel produces large quantity of pollen over extended periods of time. However, F1 hybrids are more productive if they produce small tassels. Therefore, understanding the genetic control of tassel development will better enable direct manipulation of tassel architecture for different uses.

We are using the Nested Association Mapping (NAM) population as well as the Ames Association Panel to identify QTL regions affecting tassels and ear traits. Significant QTL regions identified will be fine mapped with the ultimate goal to identify candidate genes for cloning and characterizing the genes affecting the architecture of both the tassel and the maize ears.
