Assistant Professor: Tenure-track faculty position (academic year) in Animal Breeding and Genomics with emphasis in research (primary) and teaching (secondary). The successful candidate will develop a national and internationally recognized program that elucidates and applies quantitative genetics and genomics methods to improve relevant traits in livestock and/or poultry. Areas of expertise should include, but not limited to, applied, theoretical, and computational approaches to animal breeding, genomic selection, population genetics, mixed model methodology, and livestock data science. The successful candidate will use quantitative genetic and genomic methods to improve the understanding of biological mechanisms underlying phenotypic variability in livestock productive efficiency, animal product quality, reproductive performance, animal health and well-being, and environmental efficiency, enabling optimal implementation of livestock genetic improvement programs through interaction with the public and private sectors. Academic Advisor: The academic advisor in the Animal Sciences Department will create an open and respectful environment in which students of diverse backgrounds and interests feel comfortable exploring and defining their goals and curricular pathways. This individual will have the opportunity to empower students to be actively responsible learners and assist them in making well-informed decisions, guide students in course selection and the process for registering for courses, and identify campus activities and program opportunities related to the students' major. The academic advisor will maintain a consistent pattern of contact and communications with assigned students, use data to provide timely outreach to students on their academic progress, conduct audits on students’ degree progress, and assess when a student’s situation requires referral to campus resources. In addition, this individual will maintain and ensure confidentiality of student records and teach students about the university’s structure, systems, policies, and practices. Administrative Assistant: The administrative assistant will provide high-quality administrative support to the Animal Sciences Graduate and Undergraduate Programs, including assisting the Graduate and Undergraduate Program Coordinators, Graduate and Undergraduate Program Committee Chairs, Advising Coordinator, and Staff Advisors, as well as providing relations for students and external contacts. The administrative assistant serves as a receptionist for the Student Services Suite, and is responsible for greeting students/guests, responding to undergraduate and graduate student emails, and providing information to prospective students. Must be able to anticipate needs, proactively plan ahead, and manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines, maintaining attention to detail and professionalism, including in written and oral communications. Assistant Meat Lab Manager: The Assistant Meat Lab Manager will be responsible for fulfilling the research, teaching, and outreach activities of the Department. In addition, this individual will have responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of the Purdue Meat Laboratory. Additional duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Harvesting, Fabrication, processing, distribution and retailing of meat products
  • Assisting with research projects, extension programs and teaching activities
  • Performing, creating, documenting and maintaining operational employee and food safety system
  • Fulfilling USDA (FSIS)/State inspection, HACCP and SSOP requirements
  • Performing, assisting and guiding in the Humane Handling of Livestock, Harvesting of Livestock and Poultry, as well as the Carcass Fabrication, Processing and Sanitation Activities with the Land O'Lakes Center
  • Operating and maintaining all equipment, tools and facilities with the Land O'Lakes Center
  • Assiting in the training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Maintaining a clean and safe facility
  • Operation and maintenance of specialized equiptment
