Research goals

The ultimate goals of my research program are:

  • The development and refinement of new indicators to help us assess animal welfare in a precise and scientific manner
  • The application of animal welfare indicators to quantify the welfare of farm animals in current and alternative husbandry systems
  • The development of methods of improve the welfare of farm animals in current and alternative husbandry systems
  • Improving the welfare of pigs kept as laboratory and biomedical animals

  1. The use of tear-staining as a non-invasive welfare indicator in pigs
  2. Factors influencing piglet mortality in indoor farrowing systems
  3. Understanding and reducing aggression when sows are mixed in a grouped gestation system
  4. Hazard characterization and exposure assessment of tail biting
  5. Effects of group size on welfare of veal calves
