Research Program

The overall goal of the laboratory is to enhance the sustainability of the dairy industry in Indiana by improving whole-farm nutrient balances through the use of new or improved feed and nutrient management practices and technologies. New management strategies provide additional options to dairy operations that can assist them in reducing or eliminating any potential environmental impacts. The specific research objectives are to evaluate management strategies that increase the utilization of nutrients, especially N, P, and K, and reduce the amount of nutrients imported to the farm while maintaining or improving animal health and performance. Current research projects are focusing on the evaluation of co-product feeds in the diets of dairy heifers and evaluating water usage and nutrient flows on dairy operations.
