Barry was a 10-year 4-H member and a FFA member, who often jokes about his lack of success in the 4-H beef showring. After high school graduation and his 4-H career, he attended Purdue University. He studied Ag Education and made a commitment to learning everything that he could about the seedstock cattle industry. He was a member of the Purdue Livestock Judging Team and then hit the "show road" with legendary cattlemen Knick Overpeck and Bill Couch. It was through these experiences with some of the livestock greats at the time that he gained more knowledge. Those learned philosophies from past experiences, would serve as the foundation for breeding quality cattle at Wesner Livestock Enterprises today.
With over thirty years in the Simmental business, Barry has raised and marketed numerous bulls to national semen companies and suppliers. The first successful nationally recognized herdsire was produced within his first couple of years in the Simmental business, WLE Powerstroke. Most recently, two of his bulls, WLE Uno Mas and WLE Revolution, have been placed in the bull battery of Select Sires. These bulls have made a significant maternal and functional impact in the Simmental breed. For 13 years, he partnered to market his cattle with Hudson Pines Farm through the Design In Mind production sale in Wolcott, IN. He now sells cattle in the Factory Direct and Head of the Class sales, as well as private treaty.
The showring has contributed greatly to his achievement as a livestock breeder. The WLE prefix was no stranger to the national show circuit and has received numerous Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitors three years in a row at the NAILE, starting in 1996. Barry raised three daughters in the Simmental breed and they continue to exhibit and breed Simmental cattle in their own operations.
As a livestock industry professional, Barry has found success as a judge. He has judged at the local, state and national levels across all breeds of cattle. He has judged numerous Junior National shows and at the major shows across the country. Barry also served the livestock industry as a feed salesperson and an insurance sales representative focusing on farm and crop insurance.
Barry has provided his leadership at the local, state and national levels. He served as the Chairman of the Hoosier Beef Congress, is a member of the American Simmental Board of Trustees, and holds a seat on the American Simmental Association Executive Committee.
Congratulations and thank you to Barry Wesner for your leadership and for being a very dedicated cattleman and progressive Simmental Breeder.
