Purebred Swine Breeder
Dave grew up in White County on a Dairy and Swine farm. He was very active and successful at the county and state level in 4-H showing Poland China hogs. After graduating from Twin lakes High School, Dave attended Purdue University in Animal Science and was a member of the Meats and Livestock Judging Teams. He was on the first Purdue team to win the NBS and was 4th high individual in the contest. At Purdue, he worked at the Purebred Swine Unit and was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity.
After graduating from Purdue he married Linda Kelly and went to work with Denny Shoup and his Hampshire operation in Michigantown, IN. After working with Shoup, Dave returned home and was instrumental in the development of one of the leading Hampshire operations known as Kilmer Swine Farms with his father, Parker. Dave repopulated with SPF Hampshires from John Penner in Nebraska, and quickly became a top source of Hampshire hogs not only for the commercial producer, but for the showring as well. At the first National Type Conference he attended, he captured both Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Boars.
Dave contributes a lot of his success to his involvement with Premier Swine Genetics that marketed to progressive breeders across the country. Dave sold nearly 1000 boars per year through this company and to repeat customers. Dave took great pride in his health status and performance data to help his customers and the swine industry.
As the industry changed and the reduction in privately owned sow operations was moving to contract finishing operations, Dave and his son, Jim, and his hired man, Kent Bennington, moved toward the show pig industry. With a 200 purebred and crossbred sow herd, Kilmer Swine Farms has had tremendous success with their pigs at county, state and national shows, including the 5000 head San Antonio Stock Show.
Dave has shared his time with many leadership roles such as the Indiana Pork Producers President, National Hampshire Board, the Executive Board of the National Swine Registry, and the Monticello Methodist Church. He was selected the 1986 Pork All American for Indiana and has served as a swine judge at every level across the country.
Congratulations and thank you to Dave Kilmer for using your talents as a progressive purebred breeder, an advocate for the swine industry, and serving as a strong supporter agricultural youth and students from across the nation.
