SEPAC Crop Production Research and Precision Technology 


Crop Production

SEPAC contains approximately 850 acres of row crop acreage in a corn soybean rotation. The farm is predominately no-till with tillage conducted on less than five percent of the acres annually. Large field scale research is conducted on over four hundred acres by Purdue researchers. Practical agronomic research is led by faculty from the departments of Agronomy and Botany and Plant Pathology.

Precision Agriculture

The advent and adaptation of precision technology has transformed the method in which research is conducted at SEPAC. GPS signal is provided via a Trimble RTK base station.  Field implements are equipped with auto guidance. The farm has incorporated variable rate seeding and fertilizer as standard practice.  Soils are sampled on a ½ acre grid with the aid of an automatic soil sampler.  SEPAC employs the use of two different types of display units for field work: Trimble’s FMX and Ag Leader’s Integra.  Desktop software is used to design and layout plots, analyze yield data, create drainage plans and many other tasks.  The farm uses Ag Leader’s SMS software as well as Trimble’s  FarmWorks to create and manage data.
