Graduate Student Profile
Roberta (Rob) Weiner is a doctoral student under the supervision of Dr. Linda Pfeiffer. Roberta’s academic interests lie in exploring how a variety of actors communicate about politicized science and risks. In the past, they have explored climate communication in both international and domestic contexts: at the United Nations and in the United States media. Their current research projects concern the cognitive factors involved in perceptions of risks associated with COVID-19 and the connections between physical scientists’ beliefs about social sciences on interdisciplinary relationships and their approaches to science communication.
Outside of their research, Roberta has seven years of professional experience in community and labor organizing, previously working with various local and state organizations to coordinate campaigns around issues of environmental and economic justice. They are also the founder of Graduate Rights and Our Well-being (GROW), a labor advocacy organization for graduate students at Purdue that focuses on issues of workers’ rights and administrative accountability.

Roberta is fascinated by the ways in which deeply politicized risks are communicated and interpreted. They are particularly interested in how partisan audiences interpret and act on information about climate change-related risks and why those interpretations and actions differ between partisan groups. Ideally, their research will one day contribute to designing and practicing strategies for climate change communication that help reach traditionally resistant audiences. Also, a methods aficionado, Roberta is fascinated by mixed-methods approaches and research designs.
