The board advises the U.S. Department of Agriculture's United States Agency for International Development on agriculture and higher education issues pertinent to food insecurity in developing countries. The president appoints members, who primarily represent the academic community. Gebisa Ejeta, Purdue distinguished professor of agronomy and 2009 World Food Prize laureate, was appointed to the board by President Obama in 2010.
