Hi! My name is Brendan Lloyd Powers and I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago. During my intermediate school years, I developed an interest for scientific research and further refined this passion at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an undergraduate in biochemistry with a minor in chemistry. While in Champaign, I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Steven

The main factors that lead me to the Department of Biochemistry at Purdue University were: the talented group of individuals conducting research, the type and topics of the research, the collaborative atmosphere, the quality of life/cost of living, the focus on teaching development, and the future opportunities a degree from Purdue would provide.  I joined the Ph.D. program in fall 2010 and after rotating in four labs during my first year, I joined the Hall lab.

In the Hall laboratory, I am exploring the complex regulation of the anaphase-promoting complex (APC) using mass spectrometry and biochemical techniques. The APC regulates progression through the cell cycle by catalyzing the ubiquitination of regulatory proteins and targeting them for proteasomal degradation. The aim of my research is to further characterize the complex regulatory mechanisms that control the activity of the APC in order to better understand how cell cycle progression is regulated. Characterization the mechanisms of cell cycle progression provides insight into cancer progression and development of novel chemotherapies.

Outside of research, I enjoy being a computer geek, snowboarding, playing guitar and video games, and going to concerts.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to intern at the Baxer Healthcare Corporation, where I participated in extractable/leachable analysis of medical devices
