Hi, I’m Whitney and I’m from Michigan. I received my bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Michigan State University in May of 2009 (I’m a proud Spartan and Michigander). While I was at MSU I had the opportunity to work in a variety of different research labs. When I graduated I decided to take some time off and spent three months volunteering at a primate sanctuary in Cameroon. Upon returning, I took a job as a technician in Dr. Chapple’s lab. I enjoyed working in the lab so much that I decided to begin pursuing my Ph.D. in the fall of 2010.
Broadly speaking, the Chapple lab is interested in secondary metabolism in Arabidopsis. My research in particular focuses on the physical and genetic interactions mediating transcriptional regulation of one such secondary metabolic pathway. I like using computational methods to investigate my research questions and enjoy thinking about statistics, genomics and evolution. I also enjoy science writing, promoting scientific literacy, and teaching.
When I’m not in the lab I like playing with my dog, exercising and sampling craft beer with friends.
