Hi, I’m Ji Chen. I was born and grew up in Beijing, China and I received a bachelor’s degree from Peking University majoring in pharmaceutical sciences in 2010.
My dream is to become a scientist in biology and the Department of Biochemistry at Purdue University provides me the chance to work with a number of excellent researchers to help me achieve my dream. I joined the Ph.D. program in the fall of 2010. I find faculty members focusing on many aspects of biochemistry field, from plant pathology to cancer biology, from enzymes mechanisms to viruses and structures. Besides the excellent scientists, what I have found most refreshing is that the department is very open to sharing study rooms, conference rooms and a lot of facilities with students. I can always find a quiet place to discuss science with friends.
After rotating through four different labs during my first year, I decided to join the Golden lab in May of 2011. My research focus will be on the small nucleolytic ribozymes such as the hepatitis delta virus ribozyme. By using a combination of biochemistry, molecular biology and biophysics approaches, we hope to explore the catalytic strategy employed by these catalytic RNAs. In a long run, this research will have impact on our understanding of molecular evolution and the development of ribozyme therapeutics.
In my leisure time, I watch movies, take walks and play sports.
