Spruce or Fir?

Rosie Lerner, Extension Consumer Horticulturist, Purdue University

Need help telling a spruce from a fir?  Look at the needles closely. Spruce needles are attached individually to the stem, are generally sharp pointed at the tip, and 4-sided (angular) which you can feel as you roll the needle between your fingers.  Fir needles are also attached individually to the stem but on a circular pad and are generally flattened and rounded or blunt pointed at the tip.
