Consumers significantly influence the direction of food and agricultural systems. The Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability (CFDAS) is taking a monthly pulse on what consumers are thinking, what they can afford and what food attributes are most important to them to better guide farmers and retailers along the supply chain.
Consumer Food Insights, Volume 4, Issue 6, June 2025
Key insights include:
- The Sustainable Food Purchasing (SFP) Index remained unchanged from last quarter, showing stability in consumer food purchasing habits and intentions.
- Familiarity with the term “food security” is mixed, though higher among respondents in SNAP-receiving households.
- Most consumers overestimate food insecurity and may interpret it more broadly than official measures.
- Economic hardship is viewed as the top driver of food insecurity; SNAP recipients cite other barriers like poor access and transportation.
- Most Americans are familiar with SNAP and express positive views, though some stigma persists among non-recipients.
- Most SNAP recipients find the program accessible and support more funding; non-recipients hold mixed views on its role and impact.
- We estimate (slightly) lower, yet comparable, average diet quality among SNAP recipients compared to non-SNAP recipients.
