The third\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/next-moves\/consumer-food-insights\/\">Consumer Food Insights Report<\/a>\u00a0from Purdue University offers insights into the popularity of specific policies and how opinions differ depending on a consumer\u2019s income.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-62559602830f1\" data-node=\"62559602830f1\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">Increased funding for research to create crops more resistant to heat drought and flooding, and conservation programs to pay farmers and ranchers to adopt climate-smart practices were the most popular policies included, with more than 80 percent of the consumers in support. (Purdue University Image\/Courtesy of the Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-photo-caption fl-photo-caption-below\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-6255a628079cd\" data-node=\"6255a628079cd\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">The survey-based report out of \u00a0Purdue\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/next-moves\/areas-of-focus\/food-systems\/?_ga=2.249188743.1893301250.1643641510-825029104.1642978081\">Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability<\/a>\u00a0assesses food security and spending, consumer satisfaction and values, support of agricultural and food policies and trust in information sources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-col-group fl-node-62559602830ed fl-col-group-nested\" data-node=\"62559602830ed\">\n<div class=\"fl-col fl-node-62559602830ee\" data-node=\"62559602830ee\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-62559602830f0\" data-node=\"62559602830f0\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p>Additional key results from the March survey include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"FORMAT-BODY\">The Sustainable Food Purchasing (SFP) Index remained at 68\/100<\/li>\n<li>Share of households experiencing very low food security rose to 9.7%<\/li>\n<li>Inability to find specific foods at the store decreased to 21%<\/li>\n<li>Total food spending increased by 8%<\/li>\n<li>16% of spending on food away from home went to delivery<\/li>\n<li>At present, consumer food demand is price insensitive<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-62559602830e9\" data-node=\"62559602830e9\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">The March survey added an examination of differences in responses across low, middle and high income brackets. (Purdue University Image\/Courtesy of The Center for Food Demand Analysis and Sustainability)<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-photo-caption fl-photo-caption-below\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.025em\">\u201cThe survey results show that income is a big driver of food preferences and buying behavior,\u201d said <\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.025em\" href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/agecon\/pages\/profile.aspx?strAlias=jlusk\">J<\/a><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.025em\" href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/agecon\/pages\/profile.aspx?strAlias=jlusk\">ayson Lusk<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.025em\">, the head and Distinguished Professor of\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.025em\" href=\"https:\/\/ag.purdue.edu\/agecon\/Pages\/default.aspx?_ga=2.159455805.1893301250.1643641510-825029104.1642978081\">Agricultural Economics<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.025em\">\u00a0at Purdue, who leads the center. \u201cLower income consumers spend a larger share of the their income on food, place greater weight on food affordability, are more likely to choose generic over branded products, and are overall less happy with their diets than higher income consumers. As a result, policies that increase the price of food have a disproportionate impact on lower income households.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-62559602830ea\" data-node=\"62559602830ea\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">Another interesting policy-related result was broad support for the regulation of environmental claims that food companies can make, he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-6255ae02a608b\" data-node=\"6255ae02a608b\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cConsumers may be confused by or have difficulty navigating the current food sustainability advertising landscape,\u201d Lusk said. \u201cSeventy percent of respondents supported new regulations on what companies can say about their products.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-6255ae334e051\" data-node=\"6255ae334e051\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">The survey results showed large majorities support individual policies that could improve food system outcomes, such as funding more agricultural research or regulating confined animal feeding operations, said Sam Polson, a food and agriculture survey scientist for the center and co-author of the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"fl-col-group fl-node-62559602830e2\" data-node=\"62559602830e2\">\n<div class=\"fl-col fl-node-62559602830e3 fl-col-has-cols\" data-node=\"62559602830e3\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-group fl-node-6255b025c7379 fl-col-group-nested\" data-node=\"6255b025c7379\">\n<div class=\"fl-col fl-node-6255b025c7410 fl-col-small\" data-node=\"6255b025c7410\">\n<div class=\"fl-col-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-module fl-module-rich-text fl-node-6255ae5a78e40\" data-node=\"6255ae5a78e40\">\n<div class=\"fl-module-content fl-node-content\">\n<div class=\"fl-rich-text\">\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cHowever, from a policymaking perspective, there is an increasing congressional focus on large omnibus legislation, and the public opinion data on these bills tend to be less clear,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is difficult to say that the popularity of a policy like expanding pandemic-related SNAP benefits would hold when attached to other policy objectives.\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">&#8220;Our results also reaffirm conventional wisdom in policymaking: spending less rarely makes for popular policy. The score reflects consumer food purchasing that aligns with a set of key recommendations for healthy diets from sustainable food systems. The index includes six components correlating with different strategies for achieving food system transformation: nutrition, environment, social, economic, security and taste.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"FORMAT-BODY\"><span lang=\"EN\">Higher income consumers tended to rate the sustainability of their diets as higher than did lower income consumers, particularly on dimensions related to taste, security, economics, and nutrition. By contrast, there were very little difference in high vs. low income on sustainability dimensions related to social and environment, Lusk said.
