Section 2: Program Development in Research and Extension

Goal:   Ensure that all people have equal program participation opportunities race, religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, genetic information, marital status, parental regardless of their status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, or status as a veteran.

Objective 1: Increase participation in planning and advisory groups

Purdue Agriculture administrators, faculty and staff must make every effort to ensure that committees and boards are representative of the diverse population and culture of the relevant jurisdiction (state, county, and municipality). Research and Extension programs that truly meet the needs of the audience we intend to serve involve representatives of that audience in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs. College and departmental advisory committees are expected to represent the demographics of the state and to reflect on research and extension program opportunities that address audience diversity. County Extension Boards provide overall program oversight for the local Extension program effort.  County-based councils and committees provide program input for Ag and Natural Resources, Economic and Community Development, Health and Human Sciences, and 4-H Youth Development program areas. We continue to implement the following actions steps to increase participation in planning and advisory groups:

  • Ensure that the Dean's Advisory Council is comprised of individuals who represent the breadth of the food, agriculture and natural resource system have a wide range of occupations and professional/personal backgrounds. Council member selection must consider affirmative action and civil rights policies and obligations.
  • Ensure that the Departmental advisory groups represent the diversity of disciplines represented in the department.  Selection needs to continue to consider affirmative action and civil rights policies and obligations.
  • Ensure that all Extension committee and board members are aware of and understand Purdue Extension affirmative action and civil rights policies and obligations.

Objective 2: To assist partners and collaborators in understanding our Civil Rights responsibilities, we will take the following actions:

  • Individuals, partners, or entities that collaborate with Purdue Agriculture on an on-going basis are provided with copies and expected to comply with statement of nondiscrimination or provide assurance that they do not discriminate because of their religion, color, sex, age, national origin or ancestry, genetic information, marital status, parental regardless of their status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, disability, or status as a veteran status.

Objective 3: Increase the number of domestic minority graduate students

  • Ensure that individual departments continue to develop a diverse graduate student pool.
  • Send representatives to MANNRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences), and other conferences to recruit minorities.
  • Continue financial support of undergraduate research programs that support minorities and underrepresented students such as Summer Research Opportunities and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships.
  • Target grants that enhance opportunities for minorities and women
    • Support efforts by faculty and Office of Multicultural Programs to apply for grants that develop the educational pool of under-represented groups.
  • Make sure that researchers consider diverse populations in study design where appropriate.

Objective 4: Modify Outreach Activities

  • Make reasonable accommodations for research and extension activities for persons with disabilities
    • Purdue Agriculture will evaluate and if needed, enhance the accessibility of offices, educational and program facilities and inform the public of their right to request reasonable accommodation.
  • Serve audiences with limited English proficiency (LEP)
    • Purdue Extension will provide resources for translation, interpreters, etc.
  • Increase participation of underrepresented groups in 4-H Youth Development
  • Recognize programs reaching underrepresented audiences
