Improving representation of tropical cyclones in climate prediction models

Scientists have evidence that concludes human-driven global warming is causing tropical cyclones (TCs) to produce greater amounts of rainfall, and it is believed that TCs are a major contributor to the observed increases in extreme precipitation in the United States. Professor Dan Chavas ( Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences) and co-authors developed a new approach not only to quantify the proportion of rainfall resulting from TCs in different regions of the U.S., but also to improve the ability of climate models to represent the structure and impact of TCs in a warming world.
