Stewardship/Outreach Technician 

Reports To: Stewardship Managers

Purpose of this Job:
The Stewardship/Outreach Technician is a seasonal position that will work in coordination with NICHES’ stewardship and outreach staff to implement NICHES’ mission of protecting, restoring, and sustaining Northern Indiana ecosystems. The Stewardship/Outreach Technician’s primary duty is to carry out quality stewardship practices. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Non-native, invasive species control and other vegetation management projects
  • Trail maintenance
  • Maintain written records of the tasks and work accomplished
  • Help facilitate volunteer stewardship workdays and outreach events
  • Assist in the implementation of NICHES’ Summer Nature Camp program
  • Ability to work outdoors in inclement conditions for up to 8 hours a day, performing demanding physical labor, including lifting objects up to 60 pounds
  • Experience with MS Windows-based software, including Word and Excel
  • Possess current motor vehicle license and good driving record
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of the principles of ecological restoration
  • Familiarity with the safe operation and basic maintenance of a variety of vehicles and power tools, including light duty trucks, trailers, tractors, chainsaws, and brushcutters
  • Experience with the safe use and application of herbicides
  • Experience with supervising volunteers on a given task and supervising children for prolonged periods of time

Parameters of the Stewardship/Outreach Technician Position:
Twelve-week seasonal, full-time position
Hours: Hourly position with a forty-hour work week
Pay: $15/ hour
Working conditions: 90-95% in the field, at various NICHES properties distributed widely over a 13 county service area
