Position Title: Natural Resource Technician 1
Location: Various locations along the Lake Erie shoreline
Pay Rate: $18.63/hour

Overview:
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife is seeking motivated individuals to serve as Lake Erie Creel and Field Technicians. These positions involve collecting angler harvest information and assisting with fisheries assessment and research. The data collected is vital for the management of Lake Erie's fishery.

Preferred Qualifications:
Completion of a B.S. or B.A. in Fisheries, Natural Resources, or a related field

Basic Requirements:
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Valid driver’s license
Additional Requirements for Creel Technicians:
  • Ability to use a personal vehicle (mileage reimbursed at $0.58/mile)
  • Proficiency in managing and organizing interview data
  • Competence in using electronic devices for data collection/entry
Duties:

Creel Clerk Duties:
  • Conduct interviews with anglers at designated locations
  • Collect and record data on fishing locations, trip lengths, and species caught
  • Measure and record lengths of harvested fish
  • Maintain accurate records and securely store samples
Field Technician Duties:
  • Participate in fisheries fieldwork, including trawling, netting, and electrofishing aboard research vessels
  • Collect and process fish samples for length, weight, sex, maturity, and diet analysis
  • Record data in the lab and field
  • Examine sport and commercial harvest for tags and age fish using otoliths
  • Conduct water quality, benthic, habitat, and hydroacoustic sampling
  • Assist with fisheries research projects and aquatic invasive species (AIS) removal efforts
  • Perform maintenance of facilities and vessels
Work Hours:
  • 40 hours/week (including weekends)
  • Maximum duration: 1,000 hours

March – April (1 position):
Sandusky/Maumee Rivers

April (1 position):
Toledo to Port Clinton

May – October (10 positions):
Sandusky: 2 Field Technicians

Fairport Harbor: 2 Field Technicians
Creel Technicians in:
Area 1: Toledo to Port Clinton
Area 2: Port Clinton to Marblehead
Area 3: Marblehead to Sandusky
Area 4: Huron to Avon
Area 5: Rocky River to Eastlake
Area 6: Fairport Harbor to Conneaut
