Pest Management

Pest management is one of the signature research areas of the Department of Entomology. Purdue has one of the premier urban entomology programs in the country. The urban entomology research encompasses such diverse subjects as management of general and structural pests, food industry pest management, ornamental pest management, turfgrass pest management, forensic entomology, and vector biology. The Center for Urban and Industrial Pest Management is a model for university and industry partnerships. Crop and livestock pest management emphasizes traditional IPM practices such as pest biology, sampling, economic thresholds, cultural and biological control and evaluation of pesticides. Research also targets more modern IPM issues such as resistance management in GMO crops and the effects of biofuel production on IPM strategies. Several faculty are also involved in organic production systems. The research interests of our faculty in this area are as follows:

Grzegorz Buczkowski Behavioral ecology and genetics of ants
Catherine Hill Genetics and genomics of arthropod vectors of disease
Christian Krupke Integrated management of field crop pests
Linda Mason Behavior and integrated management of food pests
Douglas Richmond Turfgrass entomology and applied ecology
Ian Kaplan Ecology of herbivores and natural enemies on specialty crops
Cliff Sadof Biological control of pests of ornamental plants in landscapes
Laura Ingwell
Horticultural integrated pest management
Elizabeth Long
