ACADEMIC POSITION

TEACHING & RESEARCH IN FOOD MICROBIOLOGY

August 2009

POSITION:   Tenure-track teaching and research faculty position in food microbiology

LOCATION:  Department of Food Science, 745 Agriculture Mall Drive, Food Science Building, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2009

APPOINTMENT AND SALARY:  Assistant Professor (academic-year appointment).  Salary commensurate with experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Earned Ph.D. in food science (or closely related field) with emphasis in food microbiology.  Previous academic experience (post doc, professorate) and food industry experience are highly desirable.  Candidates must have a commitment to teaching and research in the area of food microbiology. Applicants must have outstanding oral and written communication skills, proven expertise in teaching, excellent interpersonal skills, an interest to work on collaborative and multidisciplinary research projects, and an aptitude for grant writing.  Previous international experience is desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The successful applicant will provide leadership and scholarship in food microbiology teaching and research, with an expectation of external funding in both areas. Emphasis will be on the creation of innovative approaches to food microbiology teaching and development of a nationally recognized, high-impact education program with clear scholarship. The successful candidate is expected to teach core undergraduate courses in food microbiology (lecture and laboratory) and food plant sanitation, and graduate-level courses as needed. Also expected is academic advising of undergraduate students, assistance in special recruiting efforts, and national leadership in curriculum and course development.  Teaching responsibilities are to be complemented by collaborative and interdisciplinary food microbiology research related to bacteriology, virology and/or mycology.  The successful candidate will be expected to interact with faculty in food science and other departments and centers on campus, secure external research funds, advise graduate and undergraduate research students, and engage in national and international activities.
