 Applying Business Principles

Since its inception, the Department of Food Science has applied business principles to its activities. This led the Department to develop and approve vision and mission statements long before our academic colleagues.

Our Vision

Our vision is to be the leading food science department, globally.

Our Mission

Our mission is to positively impact the world food system and the quality of human life through our efforts to educate students and to expand and transfer knowledge for continuous improvement of the safety, quality and value of food.

Our Logo

Food Science Logo The shapes and angles which compose the Food Science Department logo represent the strength and foundation of the program. Vertical components which translate into diagonals convey positive, dynamic growth and give a sense of vision.

The symbol as a whole is created by varying components. These components are meant to be seen as unique, yet all are necessary in creating the harmony of the symbol as a whole. The Food Science program itself is composed of three disciplines: chemistry, microbiology, and engineering as they are impacted by nutrition. These disciplines have specific roles in other areas of science. Together, they are the foundation for the Food Sciences.

Color is used to show the integration of the science and the materials of the program. Blue represents the aspects of the research; green conveys the food products derived from living materials.

Together, the message of the logo tells of growth, interdisciplinary research, and ultimately of dynamic benefits of being a part of the Food Science team. The overall image conveyed is one of a unique and professional program within the School of Agriculture at Purdue University.

Blue

Blue represents the many aspects of research which comprise food science.

Nutrition

Nutrition is the underlying factor which influences the three disciplines of chemistry, microbiology, and engineering to form the foundation for food science.

Microbiology

Microbiology is one of the three scientific disciplines which forms the foundation for food science. Microbiological concerns include both fermented food products, such as yogurt, and food safety issues, such as, E. coli.

Green

Green represents the food products derived from living materials.

Chemistry

Chemistry is one of the three disciplines of science which forms the foundation for food science. Chemistry is used in the study of everything from amino acids to Xanthan gum.

Engineering

Engineering is one of the three disciplines of science which forms the foundation for food science. Engineering is used in the study of processing and packaging.
