Course Description and Objectives.

This course is an integral part of an approved internship experience that is required by all public horticulture students. Besides satisfactory completion of all duties and assignments required by the host institution, HORT 440 requires public horticulture students to submit a comprehensive written report describing overall management at the host institution and deliver an oral presentation focused on the intern's personal professional experience. In addition, a 30-50 minute oral exam is assigned based on a book selected by the student, and approved by the instructor . This course in taken in the semester following an approved internship program.

A seminar series will be scheduled wherein each participating public horticulture student will present an oral presentation related to their internship experience. A term paper will be required before 5:00 p.m. on the last Friday preceding finals week.

All public horticulture students, whether enrolled in HORT440 or not, are strongly encouraged to attend all oral presentations. In this way, students will learn about other public horticulture areas besides those that sponsored their own internships. Moreover, increased interactions between public horticulture students created by these sessions will facilitate improved interpersonal communication skills and foster the development of professional liaisons.

Since botanic gardens and arboreta have such diverse missions and management structures, students would gain much by participating in two separate 3-month internships at different institutions (as might be fulfilled during summer semesters). Nevertheless, a properly structured 6-month internship can be valuable and is thus acceptable. HORT 440 can be taken anytime after three months of internship.
