​Purdue Landscape Architecture students help create ideas for what is next on Lafayette's Fourth Street.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A Lafayette business owner is trying to add on to his property not only for his customers, but for the rest of the community as well. Some Purdue students may help the Spot Tavern’s owner Paul Baldwin with a concept for a community green space.


Melinda Appold has accepted our offer of a tenure-track faculty position as assistant professor of landscape architecture.  Melinda will join us on July 1st from the Department of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University, where she will complete the Master of Landscape Architecture degree in May.  Her teaching responsibilities will include landscape architectural design and planting design, and she has articulated a continuing scholarly interest in the assessment and performance of sustainable landscapes.  Melinda brings great depth of professional experience, combined with first-hand awareness of the realities of entrepreneurship.  She recently has been recognized at Cornell as an outstanding graduate student teacher.


Dr. Hazel Wetzstein, professor of horticulture at The University of Georgia, has been appointed professor and head of our Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, effective August 1, 2014.


​Carl Kincaid, Principal, Rundell Ernstberger Associates, LLC in Indianapolis, IN received his BS in Landscape Architecture in 1999 and has been named as one of the 2014 Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award Receipients.

Three Purdue Student projects have received national design awards from the American Society of Landscape Architecture.  Congratulations to Daniel Xu, winner of an Award of Excellence in the Analysis and Planning category; Lana Merrill and Camille Mahan, winners of an Award of Honor in the Analysis and Planning Category; and Taro Cai, winner of an Award of Honor in the General Design Category.

Lana, Cammie, and Taro are May Graduates; Lana and Cammie are in practice and Taro is enrolled at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.  Daniel is currently on Co-op at Sasaki Associates in Boston and will be returning for his senior year next Fall.
I’ve attached the link to the awards page which contains more information on all the award winners.  The competition includes both undergraduates and graduate students; our students are in excellent company:  Harvard, Penn, Berkeley, RISD, etc. in all, 26 awards were given out of 391 entries from 91 LA programs.
These awards will be highlighted in Landscape Architecture Magazine and will be presented to the students at the ASLA Annual Meeting in November.

​Michael Emerson, B.S. ’88, as senior vice president of international design firm VOA Associates, has worked on diverse projects both far and near to his company’s Chicago headquarters.

Emerson’s design credits include Chicago’s Navy Pier; the city master plan for Su Qian, China; the University of Cincinnati’s Marriott Kingsgate Conference Center; the Cleveland Waterfront Master Plan; and the Jockey Club in Miami.
Closer to his campus home, Emerson was a project leader for Purdue’s Hanley Hall, which houses the Department of Human Development and Family Studies.
“The career, contributions and impact of Michael Emerson are clearly on a steeply ascending track,” said his nominee, Robert J. Joly, head of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. “He fully deserves recognition by the College of Agriculture to acknowledge his outstanding achievements and to encourage future success in his ever-developing career.”
