Purdue Agriculture launches new leadership certificate for students

The College of Agriculture has introduced a new undergraduate leadership certificate program, Agriculture Leadership and Professional Development (AgLeadPro). The program is designed to provide students with a framework to ensure broader engagement in cocurricular activities.

AgLeadPro combines interactive learning with real-world applications.

“This program bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world leadership,” says Christine Wilson, senior associate dean and director of academic programs. “By equipping our students with skills, confidence, knowledge and experience, they will thrive and persist in their careers. Leadership and professional development are critical in today’s agriculture industry. We are thrilled to offer this opportunity and can’t wait to see the engagement and growth of our students and the lasting impact on their careers and communities.”

The program’s comprehensive curriculum identifies 10 competencies deemed critical by industry leaders.

Tracie Egger, PhD, praised the initiative. “This program is an incredible opportunity for Purdue agriculture students to develop leadership skills that are essential for success,” said Egger, a Purdue agriculture sciences education and communications alumna and learning and development facilitator for United States farm animal sales enablement at Elanco. “AgLeadPro will provide a structured approach to gaining real-world experience, ensuring that graduates are not just prepared but truly competitive in the job market.”

AgLeadPro   students will explore leadership styles, improve communication skills and develop strategic problem-solving skills.

Madisen Carns, a Purdue Agriculture undergraduate, was on the design committee for the program.

"AgLeadPro is unlike any other program offered by Purdue,” Carns said. “The most exciting part is focusing on the skills and competencies recommended by employers and collegiate leaders. This program is truly built to prepare students for the real world.”

By earning this certificate, students from all disciplines across the college will join a network of Purdue alumni dedicated to driving innovation and excellence.

The requirements are:

  1. 1-Credit Online Class: AGR 29000 (Introduction to AgLeadPro).
  2. Activity-Based Learning: Complete 10 activities, one for each competency.
  3. Reflection-Based Growth: Write reflections for each activity and a final comprehensive reflection to integrate your learning.

Students can sign up for the certification course (AGR 29000: Introduction to Agriculture Leadership) with their academic advisors or by sending an email to cate@purdue.edu.
