Students Attending 4-H Academy Learn about Food Safety in Industry

Eighteen students attending the 4-H Academy on June 13, 2019, put their problem-solving skills to the test as they assumed the role of employees in a fictitious food company to learn about food safety in industry. The students reviewed tests being run within their facility and analyzed whether each test was performed for food safety or quality. They were then asked to propose additional tests that could be performed to further ensure the safety of their products. Students were notified that consumers were becoming ill from eating some of the products made at their facility, and they conducted an investigation to determine the root cause of the complaints. To wrap up the day, students designed their own experiments to decide whether their company should keep spices to season their products or change to oleo-resins.
