College of Agriculture Career Fairs

The College of Agriculture hosts a career fair every fall and spring semester. Over 150 companies attend the fall career fair, providing students and alumni with the opportunity to learn about their organizations, submit resumes and interview for permanent or internship positions. The Career Fair is not just for graduating seniors, it is also for first year students, sophomores and juniors who are exploring career paths or internship opportunities.  The Career Fair is a great way to explore careers, pick-up company information, ask questions, and network with future employers.

In the FALL, the day before the Career Fair, mark your calendars to attend the Resume Blitz held in AGAD 121, the Student Commons from 11 am to 3 pm.  Company representatives will be on hand to critique your resume.  The evening prior to the Fall Career Fair, we host an Employer Panel Discussion. This is an open dialogue with 8 company representatives. They disclose important information about attending the Career Fair and make you more marketable.  A networking session follows the panel.

CAREER FAIR SPOTLIGHTS

DEATRA GREMAUX, JUNOR, MAJORING IN AGRONOMY WITH A CONCENTRATION IN AGRONOMIC BUSINESS AND MARKETING WTH A MINOR IN FOOD AND AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT, FROM DECATUR, IN:  Hello! I am Deatra Gremaux, a current junior in Agronomic Business and Marketing at Purdue. The past two summers I have been blessed to be able to intern for two retail agricultural companies, both internships which were gained from the College of Ag Career Fair. Last summer I interned with Helena Chemical Company as an agronomic sales and marketing intern. I talked with Helena at the career fair my freshman year and handed them my resume, however I didn’t receive an internship offer because they were looking for students with more experience. So, last year I went back and visited the Helena booth at the College of Ag Career Fair, and met with the recruiter who I had given my resume to my freshman year. I had received multiple internship offers from different companies last year, but Helena was the company I knew I wanted to intern for. I had an amazing summer, from traveling for training opportunities, meeting other interns from colleges all across the country, gaining a deeper understand of how one specific company operates, and most importantly gaining experience in the wonderful field of agricultural! I am so thankful to be a College of Ag student, who is able to utilize the College of Ag Career Fair for summer internship opportunities! I am excited to attend the COA Career Fair again this fall, and hope that my fellow Boilermaker friends use this chance as a way to network with peers and professionals, become more proficient in interview settings, and obtain an amazing internship (or future job)! Takeaway: Don’t be discouraged if you aren’t offered an internship from the company of your dreams; go out, work hard, get more experience, and talk with them again! Boiler up and hammer down!
DAKOTA WESTPHAL, SOPHOMORE, MAJORING IN AGRONOMY WITH A CONCENTRATION IN AGRONOMIC BUSINESS AND MARKETING, WITH A MINOR IN FOOD AND AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT, FROM REMINGTON, IN:  I did have a great opportunity for an internship this past summer and would not trade the experience for anything. I had heard of the company having an internship prior to the career fair, but did not know a lot about them or the internship until the career fair.

I had the incredible opportunity to be a sales intern for AgVenture D&M out of Kentland, Indiana this summer. I first had heard of this company from a fellow student who was their previous intern and advised me to visit with them at the career fair last fall. The internship I had at AgVenture is very different compared to other internships because it provided me with day-to-day experiences as a salesman and full-time employee of their company. This experience opened my eyes to the possibilities within the agronomy and agriculture industry and what it is like to be involved with local employees, owners, marketers, and financial analysts. It is not often that as a young second year college student you would be offered a great opportunity in an internship. This summer I discovered that AgVenture D&M is different. They provided me that rare chance to prove myself as a young student and gave me large responsibilities and challenges that I was hoping for this summer. This company does not just sell seed, they care about their customers, employees, and interns. AgVenture D&M helped me grow as an individual and as an agronomist. The atmosphere is like a family and you know you can ask anyone a question and they will invite even more questions and always be there to help you out. This summer has been an unbelievable experience and I owe AgVenture D&M a big thank you for the chance to work with them. I would gladly encourage any agriculture student to look into this internship if they are excited to make a difference, want to take on challenges to improve themselves and the company, and if they have a passion for meeting and helping other farmers and employees.

SPENCER ALLMAN, MAY 2016 GRADUATE, MAJORED IN FARM MANAGEMENT, FROM BROWNSTOWN, IN, EMPLOYED WITH LAND O’LAKES:
I am doing very well, adjusting to the new lifestyle and transitioning into the new role working for Land O'Lakes (Winfield) as a Master Agronomy Advisor Associate located in Northeastern South Dakota.

This was an opportunity that I found by attending the career fair as a Sophomore at Purdue. I began as a crop scout in Rushville, IN aligned with Harvestland Co-op which is a Winfield partner. Here I scouted mainly corn and soybeans throughout the summer taking yield counts, scouting for pest and disease pressures, and attending internal sales training. From there I explored my options the next fall and decided to rejoin Winfield for a second internship as a Regional Agronomist Trainee where I covered the entire state of Indiana working directly with Answer Plot management producing insight trials on experimental products. This gave me an exceptional understanding of the research and development side of the business. In my third and final internship with the company I worked the western half of Indiana as a Master Agronomy Advisor Intern working with two large cooperative accounts, Ceres Solutions and North Central Co-op, as a large account manager assisting executive growers in strategic management practices to increase farm efficacy. That internship positioned me into the Full-Time Position I have now where I am aligned with Full Circle Ag here in South Dakota as a MAA Trainee. My main job responsibilities include covering 8 cooperative branches promoting R7 Placement Tool, our precision agriculture platform using In Season Imagery to monitor plant health and trial applications. This tool also allows farmers to become stewards of the land and provide environmental sustainability, which Land O'Lakes puts as a top priority.

Relocating to South Dakota has been an amazing opportunity for me to broaden my professional network connections, improve upon product knowledge, and challenge myself personally being outside of my comfort zone to build relations with growers whom have different management and cropping practices from those in Indiana. I would highly recommend that every student take on the challenge of getting outside their geographical comfort zone as it allows you to better understand the agriculture industry as a whole. While it is challenging being away from family and friends, you are setting the foundation for a successful career by being open-minded, flexible, and being able to adapt to adversity in new environments. The challenge of relocation and the inevitable excitement of “finding yourself” in a new place force you to rethink who you are, and what you really want out of life.

  • Create a list and prioritize the organizations you are most interested in and visit their booths first.
  • Prepare questions to ask that will help you obtain the information you need, in addition to showing your knowledge of the field and interest in the industry.
PREPARATION - (Prepare your commercial - learn to sell yourself in a short amount of time.
  • Decide how you will introduce yourself in 30 seconds.
  • Greet the recruiter with a firm handshake stating your name, major, graduation date and why you are attending the Career Fair.
  • Present your resume – bring copies of your resume detailing your education, experience, skills and campus/community activities concisely. Employers recommend visiting with a CCO staff member at their office to have your resume critiqued.

Last Minute Tips
  • Show up early! Some employers pack up and leave the fair early.
  • Allow yourself a minimum of 1 hour to attend the fair and speak with recruiters. Lines may be long to speak with some recruiters, so be prepared to wait.
  • If you don't have 1 hour, any time is better than none.
THE MAIN EVENT!   'Act Professionally and Courteously'
  • Be confident, enthusiastic and polite (remember courtesy and professionalism are expected and appreciated).
  • Ask questions as needed. Base the questions on your research of the organization.
  • Listen and pay attention to what the recruiter is saying. This information may benefit you greatly if you receive an interview – ask good questions.
  • Do not monopolize an employer's time, know when to move on if there is a line of students waiting.
  • Cover letters are not necessary when you give out your resume in person.  Be prepared to give a list of references or a copy of your transcript.
  • Collect business cards and ask who the contact person is.
  • Make notes about what you talked about with each representative; use this information in follow-up letters.
  • Send thank-you letters to employers within one week after your visit or interview.

  • 30-40+ copies of your resume on professional resume paper (preferably white or ivory).
  • A notepad and pen for taking notes after meeting with each recruiter.
  • Business Cards – It may be helpful to print business cards to present to employers. PMU Boiler CopyMaker can print business cards. Contact them for details on how they can help.
