The electronic age has brought two forms of communication (Facebook/Text Messages) to the forefront when applying and interviewing for a job. Students need to adhere to etiquette for text messages, personal web sites, and social networking web sites. These are potential avenues for employers to make additional contact with or conduct additional research on candidates.
Social networking has provided an avenue for people to create their own web presence and express themselves. However, whatever information you put on these sites becomes open to public scrutiny. The risk of having your postings viewed by unknown parties is great.
- Do not post anything that a prospective employer might consider derogatory. This includes provocative photos or obscene language. Anything that is questionable will be a reflection on your character.
- Restrict your social networking profile. For posted comments that are negative, use the blocking feature. Keep in mind that most everything is archived and often difficult to erase.
You should not send text messages to an interviewer or company representative unless the employer has established this communication method as acceptable. Proofread your message for spelling and grammar. Refer to email etiquette guidelines.
