Second Interview

 

Most entry level professional positions, employers make their hiring decisions after the second interview. You receive the call/email that you have been offered a second interview.  Enjoy the moment because being asked back for a second interview means the company is interested in hiring you. You are now competing with other top candidates for the position.  This realization may cause feelings of anxiety, nervousness and panic. Don't panic, follow the helpful tips below.

  • Second interviews mean you double your preparation.
  • Review employer information and expand your research of the organization.
  • Your second interview may entail a group/panel interview.
  • Your second interview may entail lunch or dinner.
  • Request a copy of the full official job description if you don’t have it already.  This may prompt questions or clarification during the interview.
  • You will be asked more in-depth questions about your qualifications, extra-curricular activities, and prior work experience and career objectives.  Review sample interview questions and behavior based interviews.
  • Revise your list of questions for the employer.  Ask questions you did not cover in the first interview.  Your second interview will be longer than your first, so you will have plenty of time to ask several questions.
  • Be prepared to discuss salary. You might be asked about your salary requirements.  Research typical salary ranges for the position you are interviewing for.  Do not initiate a discussion about salary. 
  • You might receive a verbal offer during your second interview.  Even if the job is perfect for you, thank the employer for the offer and ask for a written offer to be sent to you. This will provide you time to think about it objectively.   
  • Don't forget to say thank you.  Follow-up with all individuals with whom you interviewed by sending a thank you note.
