Enjoy a glass or two of Hoosier wine for National Drink Wine Day

February 18, 2021

The wine and grape experts from the Department of Food Science don’t need a reason to sip their favorite vintage, but National Drink Wine Day on Feb. 18 provides an opportunity for them to recommend Indiana wines to sample and meals that  pair well with their recommendations. With 119 wineries across the state, Indiana offers a wine suited to every palette.

Cheers!

Katie Barnett

Wine grape marketing Extension specialist

Member of Purdue Wine Grape Team

“My favorite type of wine is anything dry red, but I love a good bottle of Indiana Chambourcin,” Barnett said. “I love to drink this with a meat kabob full of steak, onions and peppers, followed by a dessert of brownies. Chambourcin is versatile. It’s great in the winter by a fire. It’s delicious in mulled wine with spices. And, it is even light enough for a spring day.”

Jill Blume

Enology specialist, Department of Food Science

Member of Purdue Wine Grape Team

“I always recommend Indiana’s signature wine, Traminette,” Blume said. “It’s a very versatile and aromatic white wine that goes great with spicy Mexican or Asian cuisine. recommend Easley’s Traminette, an award-winning wine at the Indy International Wine Competition! If you like Gewurtraminer, Traminette’s parent, then you’ll love Traminette.”

Christian Butzke

Enology professor, Department of Food Science

“My favorite types of wines are delicate whites like Chardonnay, Vermentino and Riesling, or their Indiana-grown counterparts, Chardonel, Vignoles and Traminette,” Butzke said. “To accompany them, I enjoy a meal of cheese fondue during a winter storm. These wines are made throughout the state and the world, and they can be found in a diversity of styles.”
