Mission 

The Indiana State Egg Board was created by the Legislative Acts of the 1939 General Assembly to enforce the Indiana Egg Law. The original challenge of the Board was fivefold:

  1. To provide a state permit for selling fresh eggs.
  2. To provide retailers with invoices for eggs.
  3. To provide for the collection of permit fees from wholesalers and retailers selling fresh eggs.
  4. To provide for inspection.
  5. To fix penalties for the violations of the provisions of the law

The current Egg Law was revised in the 1993 General Assembly. It calls for the Board to formulate and determine standards of quality and weights of eggs sold or offered for sale as fresh eggs. Fresh eggs are consumer grades of eggs as defined by the standards of quality and weights as set forth by the State Egg Board. The Board has officially adopted the US Standards, Grades, and Weight Classes for shell eggs promulgated by the US Department of Agriculture for voluntary egg grading regulations as required by Public Law 91-597. The Board is charged with the following duties:

  1. To regulate the sale of and commerce in eggs sold or offered for sale at retail and wholesale as fresh eggs.
  2. To formulate and determine standards of quality and weights of eggs sold or offered for sale as fresh.
  3. To provide for and issue permits to wholesalers or retailers of fresh eggs.
  4. To formulate and publish definitions, names, and grades of fresh eggs and specifications for the care and handling of eggs that may be offered for sale at retail and wholesale as fresh eggs.
  5. To promulgate rules and regulations.
  6. To investigate and report violations for prosecution.

The Board is made up of nine members appointed by the Governor. The members represent the following interests.

  1. Indiana State Poultry Association, Inc.
  2. Indiana Farm Bureau, Inc.
  3. Indiana Retail Grocery and Convenience Store Association, Inc.
  4.  Indiana Retail Council, Inc.
  5.  Egg Council of the Indiana State Poultry Association, Inc.
  6. Office of Agricultural Research Programs and Purdue University
  7. Consumer Interests
  8.  Federal-State Egg Grading Plants
  9. Food Service Industry
