Mapping the evidence on climate change and foodborne disease

How does climate change affect foodborne disease in low- and middle-income countries? The research that could answer that question is scattered across disciplines, databases and languages. A Wellcome-funded project led at Purdue by Dr. Jonathan Bauchet and Dr. Jacob Ricker-Gilbert, with Dr. Nina Jovanovic at IFPRI and partners at MUST in Malawi and KALRO in Kenya, set out to bring it together in a registered systematic review and evidence gap map.

Research Services leads the review’s methods. We registered the review protocol with PROSPERO, designed a search of major international and regional databases, including sources in French, Spanish and Portuguese, and ran screening of about 3,000 records with an international team of reviewers. We also built the evidence gap maps and flow diagrams in the project’s report to Wellcome, which show at a glance where research exists and where it is missing.

The project is now a living review. We re-run the registered searches on a schedule, so new studies are added as they are published.
