Data stewardship for global food safety research

Summary

Purdue University's College of Agriculture Research Services enhances the USAID Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Safety (FSIL) by providing comprehensive data stewardship expertise, ensuring high-quality, FAIR-compliant research data management for global food safety projects.

The USAID Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Safety (FSIL), a collaborative effort between Purdue University and Cornell University, is instrumental in advancing food safety research as part of the Feed the Future mission. FSIL grants and manages awards for partnered research initiatives, including notable subawards such as Texas State University with Bangladesh, the University of Georgia with Senegal, Kansas State University with Cambodia, the University of Alaska – Fairbanks with Nigeria, and Tennessee State University with Nepal. These partnerships strive to enhance food safety practices and knowledge globally.

Our team augments FSIL’s staff by providing essential data stewardship expertise. Our team offers comprehensive workflow guidance, from data management planning to the final dataset delivery to USAID’s Development Data Library. This support is crucial in ensuring that FSIL meets its contractual obligations for data delivery to USAID.

We also provide valuable advice and assistance on dataset curation, applying AGROVOC—a controlled, multilingual vocabulary promoted by the World Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). By using the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Re-usable) to guide our curation efforts, we ensure that the research data generated is managed efficiently and meets the highest standards of quality and usability.
