Breeding Orange Corn

This summer I was able to complete an REU internship with NutraMaize breeding orang corn with Dr. Torbert Rocheford. During this internship I learned how to perform HPLC to measure carotenoid levels in corn and eggs, what it takes to maintain organic maize yield trials, how to pollinate and perform complex crosses, and more about sweet corn breeding and genetics. It was a very valuable experience for me and I’m very grateful to have learned so much about breeding in a university for a startup company. I would definitely recommend anyone that is interested in genetics and organic chemistry try and apply for the internship!
