The following question was sent to the P&PDL diagnosticians here at Purdue University:
Question: I live in north Alabama. Can you tell me if the end of August is too late to put down emerald zoysia sod?
Answer: Zoysia sod is very slow growing and it is much better to sod zoysia in early May to give it ample time to grow before winter. However, if you have to sod an area in order to prevent erosion, it is possible to sod zoysia practically 12 months a year in your area. Realize though that it will not grow and root down very well before it goes dormant. Be sure to till the soil prior to laying to give the zoysia the best chance of rooting down.
