Kara Salazar joined the Purdue University Department of Forestry and Natural Resources and Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant as Sustainable Communities Extension Specialist in 2012. Kara serves as a link between Indiana communities and scientists conducting research on sustainability. She develops programs and tools to transfer new technologies and discoveries to communities in support of informed land use and policy decisions. Working with multidisciplinary teams throughout Purdue University, Extension, and the Sea Grant college network, Kara develops products, programs, and resources to improve sustainability strategies in communities. Focus areas include placemaking and enhancing public spaces, lawn and landscaping conservation practices and natural resources management.

Kara has a B.S. in public affairs and environmental science and a M.P.A. in natural resources management and nonprofit management from the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. She also received a M.S.Ed. degree from the IU School of Education at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) with concentrations in community building and science education. Kara holds a Certificate in Fundraising Management from IU, the LEED AP Neighborhood Development credential, and is a Professional Community and Economic Developer. Additionally, Kara serves as a governor appointed member of the Indiana Land Resources Council, as a member of the Purdue Land Use Team, and as the North Central Region Representative for the Community Planning and Zoning Extension Community of Practice.
