Honors Program​

The Department of Food Science has an optional Honors Program that allows students to achieve academic excellence by taking advanced level science and mathematics courses and by doing an honors project under the supervision of a faculty member. To qualify for admission to the Honors Program, the following School’s requirements for the program must be met:
  • Completion of a minimum of 32 credits (for transfer students 16 of the 32 must be at Purdue) with a GPA of 3.25 or higher.
  • Students must apply for admission to the program through the honors program in the department. Before applying, the student should select an honors program adviser who agrees to supervise the honors project. Both the departmental honors program and Director of Academic Programs in the School of Agriculture must approve the application.
  • Students should develop a plan of study within the first semester in the program in cooperation with the faculty adviser and submit this plan to the Departmental Honors Program for approval. Students must achieve a GPA of 3.0 or better each semester while in the program.
  • Students must complete a minimum of 30 credits at the West Lafayette campus in the Honors Program before graduation.
  • The student must complete an honors project under the supervision of the honors adviser. A written report of this project must be submitted to the departmental honors program.
  • The student must complete the plan of study with a GPA of 3.0 or above and submit the written report for the honors project to the departmental honors program for appropriate certification before graduation.
  • Graduates of the Honors Program will receive a certificate at graduation stating the honor and the transcript will indicate the completion of the honors program.

To seek admission to the Honors Program in Food Science, the student must:

  • Obtain a recommendation from the academic adviser before the senior year
  • Fill out the application form and submit it to the faculty adviser for the honors project and to the honors program coordinator for approval. The coordinator will submit the application to the Director of Academic Programs in the School of Agriculture for final approval.
