Purdue Hydrologic Impacts Group (PHIG)

Quantifying environmental change impacts to water resources using data analysis, sensors, remote sensing, statistics, modeling, and machine learning.

About PHIG

Our research group consists of two faculty members and their graduate and undergraduate research assistants, post-doctoral researchers, and staff focusing primarily on the hydrologic impacts of environmental change at a range of scales, through the use of in-situ data collection, remote sensing and hydrologic models.

PHIG Team just returned from Minneapolis, MN where they attended the 2025 Annual Conference for UCOWR and NIWR. Next on the agenda is several team members presenting at the annual meeting of the Indiana Water Resources Association (IWRA) at Brown County State Park June 25 and 26.

Second year of operations using our subsurface drip irrigation system at the Agronomy Center for Research and Education (ACRE) is getting started. Had the system connected back to the water supply and fixed the early leaks! The wetland is full, with more rain the forecast. Southern Indiana and Tippecanoe County are finally out of any US Drought Monitor warnings. Of course now we need things to start warming up and drying out so that we can irrigate.

Speaking of the wetland, our own Ronnie Bernard Jr. is out there regularly in the evenings to count frogs and tadpoles. Perhaps we can get him to provide a photo for the web page.

The HAB team will be a little quieter this year as the project winds down and we work on analysis and papers, but there will be some sampling trips and maybe even a bloom to sample (no such luck last year).

Ayomide Adepeju will be in northern Wisconsin the week of June 16th to meet with tribal members and talk about her research. While up there, she will also collect data with a colleague from the CoPe project and help out with a weekend workshop. It will be a busy, but hopefully productive week.
