Lessons from Farming

This summer, I decided to stay home and help on the family farm. Due to the slow and wet spring, I had a lot of work to do when I got back from school. In May, the primary focus was on getting the crops into the ground, as the weather prevented us from doing so most days during the wet spring. Some days, we ended up side-dressing because it was just too wet to plant. This weird schedule lasted until June, when we were finally able to work around the weather and get all of the product into the ground. From there, we finished side-dressing and applying fertilizers, and then proceeded to spraying herbicides and fungicides to ensure the best yield possible. This summer taught me a great deal about patience and perseverance through any trial that the world throws at you. In farming, you rely heavily on perfect weather, and this spring it was not given to us, so we had to be flexible and adapt. That is the beauty of farming, as some days you wake up and expect to do one thing and end up having completely different plans. This summer, I learned lessons every single day, and I would not want to have it any other way.
