U.S. agricultural producer sentiment changed little in September as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer reading of 126 was just one point higher than a month earlier. However, there was a shift in producers’ perceptions of current conditions and their expectations for the future. 

Farmer sentiment dipped again in August as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer Index fell 10 points to 125. Producers were markedly less optimistic about the future in August as the Index of Future Expectationsdropped 16 points to 123. 

The Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer index declined for the second month in a row. The July index fell 11 points below June’s reading and was fueled by U.S. farmers’ weaker perceptions regarding both current conditions and their expectations for the future.  

Farmer sentiment weakened in June as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer fell to 146, down from 158 a month earlier. 

Farmer sentiment in May climbed to its highest level since May 2021 as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer index reached 158, 10 points higher than in April.

Farmer sentiment improved in April as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer climbed 8 points to a reading of 148. 

Weaker expectations for the future led to a decline in farmer sentiment in March as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer index fell 12 points to a reading of 140, down from 152 a month earlier. 

Farmer sentiment improved in February as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer climbed to 152, 11 points above a month earlier.

U.S. farmers retained their post-election optimistic outlook at the start of the new year as the January Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer Index rose 5 points above a month earlier to a reading of 141.
