2025 Summer Test: On-Test Summary
S25-1
6/12/2025
Seventy bulls weighed on to Test May 26 and May 27, 2025. Average daily gain during the receiving period was 2.83 lbs per head per day. There were a couple bulls that sit still on weight gain during the receiving period and a couple that most likely had some compensatory gain since the delivery, this is ok because the purpose of the receiving period is to acclimate bulls to their new environment and even out fill.
Dr. Funnell evaluated several bulls on May 26th for being under their projected weight. A couple bulls received Banamine® Transdermal with one receiving a dose of Draxxin®. The decision was made to run a 5 consecutive day pulse of chlortetracycline (CTC) on top of the feed to treat and prevent against a virus that seemed to be working through some of the bulls. Additionally, there has been three cases of pinkeye, all of which were treated in a timely manner with all bulls making a full recovery with no permanent scaring. In one of the cases the bull was identified for having a "wheepy/watery" eye three days before any spots or cloudiness developed. This was a case where our gut was telling us the bull needed treated on the first day but the only visual symptom was a wheepy/watery eye. The following day it was the same way and then boom; day three the eye is cloudy, talk about frustrating.
Prior to on-test weights, two bulls were found to have swelling developing in a hock. Dr. Funnell evaluated and advised to continue to monitor as neither bull was lame. Following on-test weights, the decision was made to send one bull home as a result of poor disposition and concern he would most likely not pass the evaluation in September. It wasn't that we were giving up on him; simply years of experience suggest it was highly probable the bull would revert to a poor disposition on evaluation day even if he improved between now and then.
If registration and weaning data has not been submitted to IBEP, please send this information as soon as possible. A report and "information needed" form will be included in a hard copy mailing following the 28-day report. Although we are in the early part of the test remember, parent verification to both sire and dam in addition to genomic enhanced EPDs are required for bulls to remain Sale eligible upon meeting all other requirements. Double check your registrations to confirm this has been done.
Please see the calendar on the following page for upcoming IBEP and Beef related events in the region. We are moving the 28-day weight to Monday June 23, 2025 instead of the printed June 24, 2025 to avoid a scheduling conflict for our veterinarian.
