Submitting Turf Samples for Diagnosis
There are a few things we need from you in order to most accurately diagnose your turf issue, whether that's in a home lawn, a golf course, or a sports field. Photos of the problem taken from eye-height, as well as a detailed description of how the problem progressed and a history of any chemical applications made are all important tools in determining the cause of the problem.

collect a sample
- Find an area near the edge of the problem, including both affected and healthy grass.
- Dig TWO, approximate 6-inch squares of turf, from separate areas of the same problem, just deep enough to contain contain the soil the roots are holding onto.
- Wrap your samples in a double layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil.
Complete our submission form
- EITHER Complete and print our turf submission form AND email us photos (see below).
- OR complete our online submission process. Be sure to indicate that you are sending us a physical sample, and photos with this submission.
- The following information is helpful in our diagnosis:
- Explanation of your main concern
- Type of turf
- Irrigation practices
- Date problem appeared
- Fertilization practices
- Pesticides applied
- Soil test results if known
Package a sample
- Place two foil-wrapped samples in a sturdy box, filling extra space with packing material.
- Include your completed submission form in a plastic bag to protect from moisture and dirt.
- Label the box with "this end up."
- Address the box to our lab and use an overnight shipping service to ship. See contact section of this page, or our address on the submission form.
SEND PHOTOS OF THE PROBLEM
Be sure to submit photos, either by emailing them at turf-samples@purdue.edu, or through our online tool. Make sure you indicate that the photos are in regards to a sample you have submitted or will be sending to our lab soon.
